We are happy to announce the launch of the Italian Association for Machine Learning (IAML), a not-for-profit organization with the purpose of promoting knowledge of machine learning in all aspects of the Italian public life, from universities to enterprises and IT professionals.
Artificial intelligence and data science have gathered an incredible amount of interest and investements in the last year. Most, if not all of it, has been powered by the recent successes of deep learning in many fields (from image recognition to gaming), and the revival of standard machine learning techniques and algorithms. This trend is expected to continue in the following years, and all industries will be influenced by it. McKinsey&Company has estimated that ML alone attracted more than 60% of the approximately 10$ billion AI investements in 2016, as shown below.
Aims of the association
Our aim is to leverage over our own experience as ML researchers and organizers, in order to promote a centralized hub open to all ML enthusiasts for:
- Organizing or helping in organize daily conferences, hackathons and other activities all throughout Italy.
- Promoting local events with the use of Meetups and other social platforms.
- Collecting and promoting technical posts, events, job offers, and more through our newsletters and social media pages.
Membership to the association is entirely free and all our activities will be self-funded, with the help of external sponsors and donators. We are particularly keen in promoting activities on the entire spectrum of the social life, by analyzing and discussing not only technical advancements but legal, ethical and social concerns. We agree in the view that there is a blind spot in the way ML research is perceived today, and that AI requires a need to consider socio-economical implications at large.
We are looking forward for you to join our association and help us bring forward our vision of a better data-driven society!
